Project Saksham
Project Saksham aims at economically empowering women by making
entrepreneurs out of them. Targetted at the wives of the supporting
staff working at BITS Pilani, it hopes to alleviate their economic
condition.
Out of the various products/services we thought of, we zeroed onto
Mushroom farming. Oyster mushrooms are very much in demand and can be
grown in the climatic condition of Pilani. We identified a family with
enough space to build a shed which would be used to grow mushroom. the
shed has been built and we are in the process of procuring spawn and
planting it. A major problem we shall face is to prevent the
contamination of the agro-base on which the mushroom grows.
We had considered producing broomsticks as an option. There is a very
steady market for brooms in the Institute’s maintainance division and
the skill required is not high. We surveyed the market and visited a
unit at rajgarh which manufactures brooms. We had to shelve the idea
when procuring raw material on small scale (compared to our
competitors) at competitive rates was not possible.
