Bagar Career Mela
The Rotaract Club of BITS Pilani, went to Bagar to help out the NGO, Indicorps with the organization of a Career Mela(Fair). Indicorps is in the process of setting up a rural BPO in Bagar and the organization of the Career mela was a run up to their training programme. Rotaract was there to help out with any translation and communication problems that the Indicorps volunteers had(as they are largely Indians from abroad with not much fluency in hindi).
The event had two parts. One comprised of street plays informing the people about work environments and job interviews. The other was two booths setup in the area to guide people about career opportunities and resume making.In the street plays, Volunteers from Rotaract and Indicorps acted out a bad job interview and a good one. The people watching, who were mostly the youth of the area, who were either about to enter the professional world or have just entered it, were asked to point out what were good and bad in the interviews. Similarly, good and bad workplace ethics and attitudes were shown and people were asked point out the pros and cons. After this everyone went to the booths. At the career counselling booth, volunteers cleared people’s doubts about various professions, college degrees and other career related issues. The crowd consisted of a large percentage of 11th and 12th students who had many doubts about the various entrance examinations to the multitude of colleges in India. As students who have only recently passed this stage, Rotaract volunteers were able to help a lot. At the resume booth, two laptops and a printer were setup. The crowd had negligible or no knowledge about resumes and how they are made. So volunteers quizzed participants about their personality, education and other technical and soft skills. Then we made sample resumes for their dream job profiles and gave them printouts.
At the end of this entire endeavour, the participants walked away with more information and awareness about the professional world and various aspects related to it such as interviews, workplace attitudes, opportunities and resumes.
